Place description

Topoľčany is a city located in Slovakia‘s Nitra region. The Nitra River has carved a wide valley out between two mountain ranges – Tribeč in the east and Považský Inovec in the west. Both are visible from the city. Archaeological evidence suggests that the area was inhabited in Neolithic times. The first written records documenting the existing the city of Topoľčany comes from 1173. The city is known for its wood processing, electronics, textile and food processing industries. Topoľčany also has a hockey stadium a swimming complex with 2 pools. In the summer, visitors and local residents can hang out in one of many outdoor cafes in the downtown area.

Local History and Science Museum - The museum‘s collections contain a diverse selection of items such as one of products from glass factories, which were closed down in the early 20th century, an extensive numismatic collection, a collection of historical weapons and a collection of folklore artefacts. One of the most important parts of the museum is the collection of nearly 15 000 documents on hop growing, malting and beer brewing in Slovakia. The museum‘s natural science collections include those of zoological and paleontological specimens.

Outdoor Swimming Complex – This seasonal recreational complex has two swimming pools (50 m and 25 m), a kid‘s pool, waterslide, table tennis, volleyball and football-tennis areas

Topoľčany Castle - The ruins of this old castle, which was built in the 13th century rise up over a dolomite hilltop overlooking the town of Podhradie. In the 17th century, the castle‘s owners relocated into a more comfortable nearby chateau and after the castle lost its subsequent military purpose, it was abandoned. The castle‘s main tower underwent a reconstruction in the 19th century.

Duchonka - a recreational area featuring a manmade lake, which is a popular destination for the lovers of fishing, swimming and boating. The surrounding areas are perfect for hiking and there is a bike path and tennis courts. During holidays there are held cultural performances every Saturday.
