Poznań is among the oldest and biggest Polish cities, and is situated in the valley of the Warta river. It is the capital of the Wielkopolska (Greater Poland) region and the Wielkopolskie Province. Large road junction (crossing of A2 Highway and main national roads 5, 11 and 92) and railway hub are located in the city, as well as international airport Ławica. The city is a big economic, academic, scientific and cultural centre. Each year the biggest in Poland International Trade Fairs are held here.
Tourist trail called Royal and imperial Route is marked out in the city leading through places related to rulers, kings and emperors connected with Poznań. The route was marked out to show the changes in architecture and the city’s development throughout the centuries. Pearls of architecture are located on this trail.
On the Old Market Square a treasure of Renaissance architecture, Town hall, which dominates the Old Market Square area, is situated. The legendary goats from the Town hall tower attract thousand of tourists to the Old Market Square.
The second monument of a similar value is the Fara Church, (a Baroque Parish Church of St. Stanislaus), and remaining buildings of the old Jesuit complex.
The Royal Castle on a hill with a short section of defensive walls overlooks the old Market Square.
The oldest part of the city is Ostrów Tumski, historically one of the main political centres of the old Polish state. Poland’s oldest cathedral, being a burial place of the first rulers of Poland and alleged site of Baptism of Poland, is also situated in there.
Numerous churches, palaces and castles, as well as monumental buildings of Imperial District, including the most important Imperial Castle, complete the list of attractions.
